Crew at a Glance

Thesis Run Cru (TRC) is a powerful and influential running movement based in the iconic township of Soweto, South Africa. Officially launched in 2014 by Wandile Zondo, the crew was born from the well-known Thesis Lifestyle brand with a core mission: to foster an urban running culture and get the youth of Soweto active in a fun and supportive way. They are a true community hub, hosting large weekly runs from the Eyethu Lifestyle Centre and organizing major annual events like the June 16 run that are deeply connected to the history of their home.

Thesis Run Cru: Fostering a Healthy Lifestyle in the Heart of Soweto

In the heart of Soweto, a running crew was officially launched in 2014 during the Soweto Marathon Bridge The Gap event. Thesis Run Cru was founded by Wandile, who wanted to create a platform that could get the youth and people of his community doing something positive for their health. What he started has grown into a significant movement, a perfect balance of running, lifestyle, and community pride that has become a beacon of inspiration in South Africa.

A Philosophy of Balance

The philosophy of Thesis Run Cru is perfectly captured in their own words: "Running is not our life, but it is a perfect balance to a good life." This is a crew that believes a healthy body leads to a healthy mind. As an extension of the popular Soweto-based streetwear brand, Thesis Lifestyle, the brand is deeply rooted in the urban culture of their home. Their mission is to make running accessible and fun, encouraging people to join them with a spirit of #GoodVibesOnly.

The community of Thesis Run Cru is a vibrant and growing force. On a weekly basis, they host between 50 and 100 runners at their home base, the Eyethu Lifestyle Centre in Mofolo Central, Soweto. They are also major community organizers, passionate about growing an urban running culture through their own annual events. These include the significant June 16 run (commemorating the historic Soweto Uprising), the Heri-Night Run, and their continued involvement in Bridge The Gap events, which connect them to a global family of runners.

An Invitation to #werunsoweto

Thesis Run Cru extends a warm invitation to everyone to join their movement. They are a community of opinion leaders who aim to go against preconceptions and create a fun and supportive space for all. Anyone in the Johannesburg area looking to be part of an authentic and inspiring community is encouraged to connect via their official social media channels.

The Johannesburg Running Scene

Thesis Run Cru is the definitive crew of the historic Soweto township, but they are part of a larger, dynamic running scene in the greater Johannesburg area. The city is also home to other pioneering crews like the inner-city Braamfie Runners, who are also deeply connected to street culture and the spirit of Ubuntu. This rich and diverse ecosystem makes Johannesburg a true hub for community running in Africa.

Soweto, a township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, is a place of immense historical significance and vibrant culture. It was a focal point in the struggle against apartheid, and its streets tell a story of resilience and freedom. Running through Soweto is a powerful experience, taking you past historic landmarks like Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world to have housed two Nobel Prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. The most important racing event for the community is the Soweto Marathon, affectionately known as "The People's Race," which is a celebration of the township's history and spirit.
