Belgrade Urban Running Team: Bridging Gaps from Local Streets to Global Stages
In June 2014, a casual run between five friends through the streets of Belgrade sparked a movement. This informal meet-up soon evolved into the Belgrade Urban Running Team (BURT), a crew that would grow to over 150 members and become a cornerstone of the city's running culture. They are a community united not just by a shared love for running, but by similar values, lifestyles, and a desire to make a positive impact on the world around them.
BURT believes that working together matters more than individual success. Since the beginning, the group has focused on creating a supportive and welcoming space where everyone feels included. This approach fits well with their involvement in the global Bridge the Gap movement, which brings running crews from different cultures together. Through running, BURT helps build connections and stands against nationalism and xenophobia.
BURT makes a difference in the community through hands-on social projects. They have worked with the Svratište shelter to build a bathroom and day room, collected donations for refugees, and supported organizations for the visually impaired. They also join global campaigns like Stop the Violence and Run for Peace. Their relay race from Belgrade to Zagreb showed their commitment to building friendships and connections in the region.
BURT is known for its determination, teamwork, and sense of adventure. Their participation in The Speed Project—a tough 550-kilometer relay race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas—put their endurance and teamwork to the test. Finishing this race showed their strong spirit and unity. In Belgrade, they also bring new ideas to the running scene by organizing events like the Belgrade Midnight Run.
BURT welcomes runners of all levels in Belgrade to join their team. They aim to create a fun and supportive environment where everyone feels valued. If you want to be part of this community, you can contact them through their social media channels.
Running in Belgrade lets you discover many different parts of the city. Kalemegdan Park, once a fortress, is a favorite spot with great views of the Sava and Danube rivers. For a peaceful run, Ada Ciganlija island has quiet, car-free paths. If you prefer city life, you can run along Knez Mihailova Street or through the neighborhoods of Novi Beograd and Zemun.
Belgrade offers many exciting running events each year for both local and international runners. The biggest is the Belgrade Marathon, which also features a half marathon and shorter races. The springtime Belgrade Half Marathon is especially popular with local groups like BURT and fills the city with energy and excitement.
