Crew at a Glance

The Nine Four is a remarkable and deeply meaningful running club based in Cape Town, South Africa. Founded in 2013 by Paul, the crew's name is a powerful tribute to 1994, the year South Africa became a democratic state. Their core mission is to embody the spirit of the new nation by creating a diverse and inclusive community that brings together people from all backgrounds, including those who were previously considered "illegal" in the old South Africa. They are a tight-knit family of "unlikely individuals" who have come together to be better, using running as the golden thread that ties them together.

The Nine Four: Running in the Spirit of a New South Africa

In 2013, a new running movement was born in Cape Town with a purpose that ran far deeper than just logging miles. After being inspired by the Berlin Braves crew while abroad, photographer and director Paul returned to South Africa and, together with friends, founded The Nine Four. They set out to create a community that was not just about running, but about building a safe space where people could be themselves, free from society's pressures and stigmas, and united in a shared passion.

A Philosophy Born in 1994

The philosophy of The Nine Four is profoundly rooted in the history of their country. Their name is a direct reference to the year 1994, a symbol of the end of apartheid and the birth of a new, democratic South Africa. This name represents their entire reason for being: to create a crew that mixes people of all races and backgrounds, fostering the kind of unity that was once forbidden. While running is the activity that brings them together, they believe their purpose "has nothing to do with running, in all honesty." It is about being a family of unlikely individuals who have come together to support each other and become better people. Their white rabbit logo symbolizes a goal that can be chased but is often difficult to catch, representing their constant pursuit of their objectives.

The culture of The Nine Four is characterized by intimacy, support, and shared experiences. They are a community that meets two to three times a week, a space where ego is left at the door. From their early days of running short distances around the block in mismatched clothes, they have grown into a dedicated team that now works towards conquering the longest races of their lives. This journey is a testament to the power of a crew to help you through challenges and encourage you to keep going.

The Nine Four extends an invitation to those who are looking to be part of more than just a running club, but a family. They have created a safe space for personal growth and camaraderie, welcoming individuals who share their passion for running, creativity, and community. Interested runners are encouraged to connect with them via their official social media channels.
