South Side Run Crew

South Side Run Crew (SSRC) is the original and pioneering urban running crew of Makassar, Indonesia. Founded in April 2016 by a group of four friends, they were created to bring the modern run crew movement to their hometown. Their philosophy is perfectly captured in their clever and welcoming motto, "May The Pace Be With You." They are a community that doesn't care if you run slow or fast; the only goal is to enjoy the run, the city lights, and the company of others.

South Side Run Crew: May The Pace Be With You in Makassar

In April 2016, four friends—Idham, Faisal, Irfano, and Mirza—decided they wanted to conquer the streets of their hometown and create a new kind of running community. From this simple idea, South Side Run Crew (SSRC) was born, becoming the very first urban running crew in the vibrant port city of Makassar. They set out to create a space where running was, above all, a way to interact with other people from different backgrounds.

A Philosophy Where the Pace is With You

The philosophy of South Side Run Crew is wonderfully simple and inclusive, as summed up by their motto, "May The Pace Be With You." This is a crew that genuinely does not care if you run slow or fast. Their founding principle is that as long as you can run and enjoy it, all will be fine. They believe running is a powerful way to bring people together and that the shared experience is far more important than the numbers on a watch.

The culture of SSRC is built around fun, social night runs that showcase the beauty of their city after dark. Their runs take them through the "Makassar city lights," creating a unique and exciting atmosphere. This focus on evening runs is the anchor of their community, providing a consistent opportunity for people to de-stress after a workday, connect with friends, and experience their city in a different light.

South Side Run Crew extends a warm and open invitation to anyone and everyone in Makassar. If you believe that running should be about enjoyment and community rather than speed, this is the perfect crew for you. To join them for a run through the city lights, you are encouraged to connect with them via their official social media channels.

The Makassar Running Scene

As the first urban running crew in their city, SSRC played a vital role in building the modern running scene in Makassar. They helped to pioneer a new, more social and inclusive approach to the sport in the region. The capital of South Sulawesi is now home to a growing and passionate community of runners, with other groups and clubs that contribute to a vibrant local athletic culture.

The city of Makassar is a historic port city and the bustling capital of the South Sulawesi province in Indonesia. It is a major hub in eastern Indonesia, known for its rich culinary scene and beautiful waterfront. The city's coastal location provides a stunning and often breezy backdrop for its dedicated running community.

The night runs of SSRC explore the most iconic parts of their city. A favorite route for the entire city's running community is the famous Losari Beach waterfront promenade, which is a spectacular place to run as the sun sets and the city lights begin to sparkle. Their runs also likely take them past historic landmarks, such as the Dutch colonial-era Fort Rotterdam. The premier racing event in the city is the Makassar Marathon, which offers several distances and takes participants on a scenic tour of the city and its coastline.
