Cães D' Avenida: The Heartbeat and Soul of Porto's Running Scene
Cães D' Avenida got its start in 2011 on Avenida do Brasil, right by the ocean in Porto. It began with a few friends and acquaintances meeting up for runs, and soon more and more people joined in. By 2013, they had enough energy and support to officially form the Cães D' Avenida sports association, with 180 founding members. Since then, they’ve been a key part of Porto’s running community.
The name came from a joke by their founder, João, who everyone called Pidas. He used to say the runners looked like dogs chasing after the real dogs on the avenue. The name stuck. Pidas was the heart of the group, and now Carlos, João, Francisco, and Miguel keep his spirit of friendship and support alive. They believe in working together in a sport that’s usually about individual effort, always encouraging each other to do their best.
Most of the runners in Cães D' Avenida are from Porto, which gives the group a real connection to the city. Their biggest event is the Corrida Pidas, a 10km race they started in 2017 to remember Pidas. It’s open to everyone, even kids, and takes place in Foz do Douro, right where the crew usually runs. This race has become a special part of Porto’s running scene.
The crew is serious about training but also about having a strong social bond. Their main event is the Mensalão, a 10k run on the second Saturday of every month at 9:30 a.m. Anyone can join in front of the Foz tennis court, and there are different pace groups so everyone feels welcome. The Mensalão is now a regular highlight for runners in Porto, giving people a chance to train and meet others.
Cães D' Avenida welcomes anyone who wants to join their monthly Mensalão run. It’s a great way to experience the group’s friendly and supportive spirit. Just show up on the second Saturday of the month and run 10k with them.
The crew’s home is Foz do Douro, a coastal spot with a long promenade and amazing views of the Atlantic. Another favorite route is along the Douro River, passing through the historic Ribeira district. If you want more greenery, Parque da Cidade is one of Europe’s biggest city parks, full of trails and hills.
Porto is known for its love of running and hosts several world-class events that attract runners from all over the globe. The Meia-Maratona do Porto (Porto Half Marathon) is a major race held in September that is perfect for runners of all levels and offers stunning views along the Douro riverfront. For those seeking the ultimate challenge, the Maratona do Porto (Porto Marathon) takes place annually in November, taking runners on a scenic and competitive journey through the city's most iconic landmarks.
